Cataract

A cataract is the cloudy whitish area that appears on the lens of the eye which obstructs vision as a result of the opacification of the lens and therefore obstructing light from passing and being focused on to the retina at the back of the eye. For people who have cataracts, their vision usually appears a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window which makes it difficult to appreciate colours, drive, read, recognize faces, and cope with glare from bright lights. Most cataracts are as a result of biological aging and as it slowly develops most people do not know they have them, but as the clouding progresses, the loss of vision worsen which could even lead into blindness. The symptoms of early cataract may be improved with new eyeglasses, brighter lighting, anti-glare sunglasses, or magnifying lenses. However, if these measures do not help, surgery can be performed to effectively treat and correct the problem. The surgery basically involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens.
